A Tribute to a Distinguish alumnus and one- time President of ABU Alumni Association: Late Alhaji Abubakar Gimba

It is with heavy heart but with gratitude to almighty Allah that the Directorate of University Advancement, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria announce the passage of one of its eminent Alumni, a one-time President of the ABU Alumni Association and a renowned writer Alhaji Abubakar Gimba, who died on Wednesday, 25th February, 2015 after a protracted illness.

The late Alhaji Abubakar Gimba was born on 10th March 1952 in Nasarawa, Lapai Local Governing Area of Niger State. He began his educational career in the country up to the University level where he obtained his first degree at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, with B.Sc. in economics in 1974. Late Alhaji Gimba attended the University of Cincinnati, Ohio in the United State where he obtained M.A (Econs). He attended the University of Bradford; (UK)’s Project Planning Course on Infrastructure in 1982. In the year 2000, he attended the University of Iowa’s writing programme sponsored by U.S Embassy in Nigeria at the behest of the State Department, as an election observer in Washington D.C. during the election of George Bush Jr.

The Late Abubakar Gimba’s   working career traversed in 1975 to 1987 as a Civil Servant in the Niger State Government where he   retired as a Permanent Secretary. He served in the Ministry of Economic Planning and Finance.  In 1988, He became an Executive Director in Union Bank, then one of Nigeria’s top three banks. He later served in the United Bank of Africa (UBA) as an Executive Director for three years. The Late Abubakar Gimba later left the banking sector in 1996.

He also served on the Ahmadu Bello University’s Governing Council from 2002 to 2006 as the national President of the ABU Alumni Association. He contributed immensely to both the University Council and Alumni Association.

The Late Abubakar Gimba, was appointed a Member of the Think-Tank Committee, the leading advisory body to the then Head of State, General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar, in 1998 -1999.  After he served as one of the Generals three Advisers when he was appointed the Mediator in the Liberian Civil war, by the ECOWAS, West Africa’s regional political and economic body from 2004 to 2006.

Late Abubakar Gimba was in 2004, appointed the Chairman, implementation Committee by the Niger State Government to establish its first State Government-owned University, he became the University’s first Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of its Governing Council when the University took off in 2005. He served up to 2008.

In November 2008, Alhaji Gimba of blessed memory was also appointed   as the Special Adviser to the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Economic and Budget Matters. He was also appointed into the Presidential Advisory Council to advise Nigeria’s President on various matters, in March 2010.  Soon after which he was appointed as a Member of the Presidential Review Committee on Public Service in 2011.

The Late Abubakar Gimba was a writer, and author of about six novels, a collection of short stories, two works or poetry, two journalistic essays, two works of epistolary, as well as an additional one for children. Footprints; the trail of Sacrifice; Sacred Apples: Witness   to Tears; Letter to the Muslim Fundamentalist; This Land of Ours; and Letter to the Unborn Child are some of the titles.  He was elected as the National President, Association of Nigerian Authors, the leading body for Nigerian writers once headed by Chinua Achebe and the Noble Laureate, Wole Soyinka, between 1997-2002.

The late Abubakar Gimba had in the year 2012, delivered a public lecture with the theme “HOISTING THE GAMJI FLAG ATOP THE BAOBAB” during the ABU Alumni 2012 Annual General Assembly (AGA). The passion and love, the late Gimba has for his great alma mater, the Ahmadu Bello University, came to the open yet again when he single handedly mobilized grass root collections of some personal donations amounting to five hundred and eighty five thousand naira (585,000.00) cash from some of his class mates towards the successful hosting the ABU @50 anniversary, which he personally delivered to the ABU Management.

Late Abubakar Gimba left behind 3 wives and Children, On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Staff, Students and the entire ABU community, we join other well meaning ABUSITES and Nigerians in praying to Almighty Allah to grant his soul rest in the Jannatul Firdausi, amin.
