The Commandant, Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, Brigadier General Christopher Musa has pledged to partner with the Ahmadu Bello University, Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR), for training of the Army personnel and their spouses on modern agricultural production technics to enhance food security.

 He made the pledge when he paid a working visit to the Director of the Institute, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar in his office in March 2016. The Commandant expressed enthusiasm with the remarkable contribution, the Institute put in place towards boosting food security through enhance agricultural research practices offers to farmers. He said the Military was working hard to ensure it protect the Nation’s territorial integrity through the provision of adequate security, noting that food security was more vital to human existence as a Nation.” I wish to commend IAR, for what is doing here because food security is vital to human existence in every aspect of life; security comes second because without food nothing can work” he said.

Brigadier General Musa stated that the purpose of the visit was to reiterate the commitment of the military to the partnership and to also familiarize themselves with the Institute and work out areas of collaboration, which include training and provision of technical support on the establishment of agricultural farms, poultry production as well as irrigation in order to combat hunger and crime in the Country.

In his response the Executive Director of the Institute, Professor Ibrahim Umar Abubakar, stated that food security was synonymous with National security noting that the impact and contributions of the Institute Research over the years to national development cannot be over emphasized. He said if our research can reach all Nigerians, it will reduce youth restiveness because food security is paramount to Nation’s development.

Meanwhile the Vice chancellor has appointed Prof. Olufunmilola Alabi as the new Dean, Faculty of Agriculture. Her appointment was sequel to the consultation exercise conducted in the Faculty in February this year.

Prof. Alabi takes over from Prof.Gerald Ankpa whose tenure ends in February, 2016. By this appointment Professor Alabi becomes the 17th Dean and the first Female indigenous Dean in the 50 years history of the Faculty. Prof. Alabi is the first female indigenous Ph.D graduate in the department of crop protection and also the current president of the Nigerian society for plant protection (NSPP).
