Title: LECTURERS CHARGED ON PUBLICATION OF ACADEMIC BOOKS TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE

Ahmadu Bello University lecturers have been urged to take up the challenge thrown to them by the institution’s Mathematics Department in the publication of academic books that would provide quality research materials for students of the University.

The call was made by the Dean of Sciences, Professor AK Adamu, during the presentation of five undergraduate’s textbooks authored by the Department.

Professor Adamu stated that the initiative, if adopted by other departments and centres in the University, would go a long way in opening a new era of producing quality textbooks which would start going out to other institutions at home and abroad.

He then appealed to the University management to purchase the books for its various libraries in order to generate enough funds that would finance publication of more books.

In his remark, one of the authors of the published books, Professor D Singh, stated that reading of quality books remained the bedrock of science, because without reading quality books the research outcome would not be authentic.

He stated that the dream of the Department, which started in the year 2000, had finally come to pass. Professor Singh commended the efforts of staff of the Department for the success of the publication of the books.

Professor D Singh also expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha as well as the Education Trust Funds (ETF) for their moral and financial supports towards the actualization of the publication.

In his address, the Director of Institute of Computer and Information & Communication Technology (ICICT), Professor Sahlu Junaid, said that the event involved book presentation and inauguration of a building named after a renowned Mathematician, late Dr Umar Makarfi.

He stated that the desire for students to meet up with the growing needs of having standard reference materials made it imperative for the publication of the books. He urged the University community to promote the adoption of the books in order to encourage their authors to do more.

In a goodwill message, a former Vice Chancellor, Professor SU Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to the University management for associating the project with him, and he credited the success of the project to the present Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha.

In his remark, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, described the late Makarfi as a friend and a brother whom they shared same ideology. He applauded the invaluable contributions that the late Makarfi made to the Department of Mathematics. He also prayed for the repose of his soul.

He then thanked the Department for finding it worthy to be committed to the standards which he said was the first of its kind, while urging other departments to follow suit. He said that the University was ready to provide funds for lecturers who are willing to produce textbooks for students since there was a dedicated fund for publication of textbooks by the TETFUND.

The Vice Chancellor then thanked Professor D Singh for his passion towards the publication of the textbooks, while expressing optimism to see other presentations of books before his exit of the role of leadership of the University early next year.

In his speech, the chief presenter and an alumnus of ABU from the Department of Mathematics, Chief Tony Ezekiel, stated that mathematics was the foundation upon which all aspects of human endeavour revolved.

He expressed his willingness to renovate lecture rooms in the Department in addition to the pledge of donating two million naira (N2,000,000:00) towards the promotion of books publishing as part of his contributions towards educational development of the Department.

Over two million, six hundred thousand naira (N2,600,000:00) was realised in pledges during the book presentation.

Highlight of the occasion was the formal inauguration of the late Umar Makarfi building which was conducted by the former Vice Chancellor, Professor SU Abdullahi.
